BELGIAN SOCIETY IN HISTORIC CENSUSES

HISTORICAL DATABASE OF LOCAL STATISTICS

LOKSTAT is the name of a database that houses a selection of numerical data related to very diverse domains of bygone societies.

It contains quantitative and quantifiable series that cover the entire Belgian territory and are available at the lowest level, i.e. the municipal level. The earliest statistics date from the year 1800 when municipalities were established as administrative entities. The statistics stop in 1970 because that is when the first census took place in which the results were saved digitally per individual.

The collection has grown historically. The largest part is occupied by the classic censuses of the population, industry, agriculture and trade. LOKSTAT also contains data related to other social sectors. The digital series was largely realised by manually entering the original numbers.

A description of the available collections will be placed on this website at the end of the digitisation project.
